Planning Ahead for Your Building Permit

Planning ahead is essential to obtain a building permit. If you’re altering the “footprint” of your property, your application must first go through a review by the Planning Commission (Click here for Meeting Calendar). The Commission then makes a recommendation to the Board of Supervisors (Click here for Meeting Calendar), who authorize the permit application and forward the plans to the Township Building Official for review and fee calculation. The entire process can take up to 6 weeks.

What Do I Need a Permit For?

To determine if your project requires a permit, please contact the Township Office. Be sure to verify whether a permit is needed before starting any project. A building permit packet and checklist are available at Castle Rock Town Hall.

Some examples of projects requiring a permit include:

New buildings

Additions (bedrooms, family rooms, garage, etc.)

Residential Work (decks, pools, fireplaces, roofing, windows, etc.)

Remodels (basement finish, kitchen remodel, etc.)

HVAC (heating, ductwork, air conditioning, etc.)

Plumbing

Electrical (permit from the State of Minnesota)

Septic systems

These are just some examples and do not cover all projects that require a permit. Please contact the Township Office to confirm if your specific project needs a permit.

A building permit gives you legal permission to start your project. It ensures the work is safe, up to code, and properly inspected, protecting you, your family, and your investment.

Permit Application Process
  1. Submit your application: Complete the permit application and submit it at Town Hall. You must provide site plans and building plans at the time of application.
  2. Planning Commission & Board of Supervisors Review: Your application will be reviewed by the Planning Commission, who will then forward their recommendation to the Board of Supervisors for approval.
  3. Building Inspector Review: Once approved, the building inspector will review your plans, suggest changes if needed, and issue the final permit once the plans meet the required standards.
  4. Shoreland/Floodplain Requirements: If your project is within County shoreland/floodplain jurisdiction, you must also obtain a permit from the Shoreland Administrator.
  5. Fees: After the building inspector approves the plans, all fees are to be paid to the Township Clerk before the building permit is released and construction can begin.
